Tikkaway Grill may be only 14 months old, but all of its customers agree that it feels like a New Haven staple. Like any other New Haven staple — Blue State, Pepe’s, froyo? — it was inevitable that we would need another spot to get our healthy-fresh-fast Indian food fix. This past Thursday, our favorite local business owner Gopi Nair cut the ribbon on his restaurant’s second location at 2 Howe Street.
The med school/hospital crew lucked out with this location, but Gopi and I agreed that students living off campus will make their way here too — the free wifi and huge space helps. Gopi also sees Tikkaway as an urban revitalizer, explaining that he hopes the influx of customers will drive an expansion of businesses in the otherwise-quiet area. Gopi’s goals are growing alongside his success — not surprising for someone who works over 100 hours a week.
The food at 2 Howe Street is just as flavorful, fresh, and interesting as it is at the Orange Street spot. While we’re all for the concept of leaving the choice in the hands of the customer, don’t be afraid to ask Gopi or his staff to make you a creation of their own. Even if they put every available ingredient and sauce in a rice bowl together, there’s no way it wouldn’t be delicious.
